Luca Vanello's installation intertwines natural and manmade elements into a magical oasis suspended in time and space. He defies the notion of inertness through the dynamic interaction with climate forces like humidity, light, water, and wind. Through his exploration, Vanello delves into the adaptive responses of materials to their surroundings, blurring distinctions between the living and nonliving. Just as an act of marriage between life and death and in the paradoxical gesture of preserving by taking, Luca Vanello is stripping natural elements to their bare form, creating a timeless and eternal installation.

The concept of this work is inspired by alluvial ecosystems, made up of sand and earth left by rivers, floods and streams etc. Such an ecosystem, characterised by moisture loving species, was recently introduced in Asiat Park. This installation, where various elements interact through water, echo this alluvial landscape from which the plants originate. In preparation for this exhibition, Vanello has been artist in residence in Asiat Park since August 2023. This space, which also served as his studio, is filled with transformed plants of which the chlorophyll is removed in order to pause their natural cycle. Over a period of six months, Vanello collected depreciated plants from a green inaccessible wasteland on the opposite side of the Zenne, an area we today refer to as “Darse”. It concerns plants that are labelled as valueless or invasive, which will be removed during the second phase of the redevelopment “Asiat/Darse” starting in the autumn of 2024.

Taking a closer look, one will discover sculptures crafted from PETG, a material often used in robotics, and shapeless blobs made from hydrophilic alginate. As rainwater drips discreetly, the shape of those blobs evolves throughout the exhibition as they absorb moisture from the air and rainfall. The same goes for Vanello’s hint to the future through 3D printed "seeds," that are slowly melting in the humidity to release plant nutrients, dispersing as visitors move through the space.

The materials used in the installation are the result of ongoing collaborations with the research centres MERLN at University Maastricht and Makerspace at University Hasselt. This project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos. This collaboration is framed within the innovatietraject stedelijke natuur & natuurweefselplanning: living lab Asiat-Darse.

Luca Vanello (b. 1986, Trieste, IT) explores how we can reach new forms of 'togetherness' through art. In doing so, he questions the dominance of the human perspective: How do people relate to the changing environment to which they belong? His artistic practice exists at the intersection of technological and organic materials and centres around themes such as shared vulnerability, care, transience, biological decay, relationships and equality. 

Luca Vanello lives in Brussels. He graduated from the Universität der Künste Berlin with Professor Gregor Schneider and with an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts, London. In 2020 he completed the residency at the HISK, Ghent.

L'installation de Luca Vanello entrelace des éléments naturels et artificiels dans une oasis magique suspendue dans le temps et l'espace. Elle défie la notion d'inertie par l'interaction dynamique avec les forces climatiques telles que l'humidité, la lumière, l'eau et le vent. À travers son exploration, Vanello plonge dans les réponses adaptatives des matériaux à leur environnement, brouillant les distinctions entre le vivant et le non-vivant. Tout comme un acte de mariage entre la vie et la mort et dans le geste paradoxal de préserver en prélevant, Luca Vanello dépouille les éléments naturels jusqu'à leur forme la plus simple, créant une installation intemporelle et éternelle.

Le concept de cette œuvre est inspiré par l'écosystème alluvial, caractérisé par des espèces aimant l'humidité, qui a récemment été introduit au parc Asiat. Cette installation, où divers éléments interagissent, fait écho à ce paysage bordé d’eau d'où proviennent les plantes. En préparation de cette exposition, Vanello est artiste en résidence au parc Asiat depuis août 2023. Cet espace, qui a également servi de studio, est rempli de plantes transformées dont la chlorophylle est retirée pour interrompre leur cycle naturel. Pendant une période de six mois, Vanello a collecté des plantes dépréciées d'une friche verdoyante, inaccessible de l'autre côté de la Senne, une zone que nous appelons aujourd'hui ‘Darse’. Il s'agit de plantes étiquetées comme non valorisées ou envahissantes et qui seront enlevées lors de la deuxième phase de la réhabilitation ‘Asiat/Darse’ commençant à l'automne 2024.

En regardant de plus près, on découvrira des sculptures fabriquées en PETG, un matériau souvent utilisé en robotique, et des amas informes fabriqués à partir d'alginate hydrophile. Ils semblent organiques mais en même temps abstraits. Tandis que l'eau de pluie goutte discrètement, leur forme évolue tout au long de l'exposition alors qu'ils absorbent l'humidité de l'air et des précipitations. Il en va de même pour l'allusion de Vanello à l'avenir à travers des "graines" imprimées en 3D, qui fondent lentement dans l'humidité pour libérer des nutriments végétaux, se dispersant au fur et à mesure que les visiteurs se déplacent dans l'espace.

Les matériaux utilisés dans l'installation sont le résultat de collaborations en cours avec les centres de recherche MERLN de l'Université de Maastricht et Makerspace de l'Université de Hasselt. Ce projet a été rendu possible grâce au généreux soutien de l'Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos. Cette collaboration s'inscrit dans le cadre du trajet d’innovation stedelijke natuur & natuurweefselplanning : living lab Asiat-Darse.

Luca Vanello vit à Bruxelles. Il est diplômé de l'université des Arts de Berlin auprès du Professeur Gregor Schneider et détient un Master en Beaux-Arts de la Slade School of Fine Arts de Londres. En 2020, il a terminé sa résidence au HISK, à Gand.
