Horst thrives on its community, shaped and energized by many hands. Born from volunteer spirit, over 500 volunteers annually bring Horst to life, making communal work our heartbeat. During the five Atelier weeks, participants collaboratively create the immersive festival and visual arts exhibition.
The Atelier is spread across five weeks from April 14th until May 17th. We invite you to join us for a minimum of one week, each beginning on Sunday evening with an introductory get-together and ending on Friday. Only the last Atelier week runs exceptionally from Saturday to Thursday. Our days are filled with creativity and collaboration from 09:00 to 18:00.
You’ll be spicing things up in the kitchen together with the chef(s).
Feeding the force: food will have to be put on the table in order to keep everyone healthy and satisfied! Experience in the kitchen is a nice plus but not obligatory. It goes without saying that health- & safety instructions are to be respected. Besides the main meals, you'll master the art of snack-time and coffee breaks to keep spirits and caffeine levels high. Lastly, you'll set the table in order to make sure everyone can be seated and enjoy their meal to the fullest. This also includes collecting chairs, providing cutlery and glasses etc. Clearing the table and dishes are done by all Atelier participants.
The catering ateliers are spread across four timeframes:
Create adventurous lighting & exciting darkness on the festival grounds.
In collaboration with our light production team, you will help create an adventurous and exciting darkness on the festival grounds or stages. Learn about light fixtures, positions and installation. Safe to say this one’s for the creatives who aren’t afraid to dig into the action.
Join hands with our architecture team and shape the terrain.
While the natural charm of Asiat Park is already a wonder to behold, our mission is to elevate its magic. As a scenography collaborator, you’ll join hands with our Architecture team, weaving art and functionality into the very fabric of the festival. Your canvas? The entire terrain. From crafting intimate hangout spots to adorning entrance and bar structures, each task is an opportunity to unleash your creativity. Imagine building a 60m long counter in the food hall, not just as a structure, but as a piece of art. And it’s not just about beautifying spaces – you’ll also bring functional art to life, ensuring signage is as aesthetically pleasing as it is informative. Here, every brushstroke, every detail, contributes to an immersive festival experience that’s as enchanting as it is unforgettable.
Bring the Horst Expo to life with Rachel Daniëls and Luca Vanello.
Horst's arts programme showcases global contemporary art across various disciplines. Behind the seamless aesthetic lies intense preparation. Collaborating with our arts team, production manager, and artists like Rachel Daniëls and Luca Vanello, you’ll help bring these artworks to life. This role offers a deep dive into artistic practices, requiring attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility. Beyond creative tasks, you'll also assist in venue preparation. Remember, the beauty of art is in its making, which sometimes includes the less glamorous but equally important tasks like preparing venues, mopping floors, and tidying spaces. Join us for a behind-the-scenes adventure into the world of art production.
Shape the bar's exterior with Stand van Zaken and Serban Ionescu.
The Officer’s Bar is a centerpiece and a place to meet up at the intersection of the park trajectories. Additionally, the bar represents an extension of the art programme due to the ambitious and creative input from Stand van Zaken and artist Serban Ionescu. As a participator for this project you will focus primarily on building together the outdoor of the bar, entrance, and sculptural interventions on the facade. The focus on the exterior works as a complementary renovation process of the interior that started in the winter of 2023. For this project we are searching for people with an affinity with architecture, arts and culture.
Build the main stage and sports field with Piovenefabi.
Piovenefabi, founded by Ambra Fabi ad Giovanni Piovene, produces architecture, urban research, territorial visions, and public design works regardless of the size, commission, or client. When dealing with a shared context and its almost infinite interpretations, Piovenefabi believes spaces and objects can act as supports for both personal and collective experiences.
Horst invited Piovenefabi to design a pavilion on a new location, an abandoned sportsfield. The current steel canopy, casting a rather somber shadow over the sports ground, is set to be disassembled. Working closely with the designers at Horst Atelier, you will reuse the canopy’s steel components and reconstruct them into a new open steel structure. This transformation will breathe life into this currently unused place, transforming it into a vibrant multifunctional space for sports, play, and dance.

Team up on various projects with Every Island & Flore Fockedey.
Continuing their collaborative journey from last festival edition, these two creative entities will guide two ateliers.
Every Island is a design collective that investigates the concept of performativity through temporary installations and uses ambiguity as a design tool. Similarly, Flore Fockedey, advocating a sensitive and multidisciplinary spatial approach, channels textile as her main path of expression in design.
This collaborative project unfolds into two distinct installations, each allocated to its own atelier week. The first installation aims to transform an overgrown and neglected piece of ground along the river’s bicycle path into a threshold, defining both a ‘purifying’ access to the site as well as a space for appropriation, rest, gathering. The second installation is an infrastructure: a generous entrance gate conceived as a temple, to celebrate the act of entering and leaving the festival’s site.

Producing the whole shebang. This one's where the action’s at!
Horst stands for a top drawer festival production, which requires a great deal of physical work. Cabling all kinds of equipment, assisting with sound and light preparation, and readying the terrain don’t even cover half the load of what you’ll be doing. Knowing a thing or two about festival production is definitely a plus, and owning a forklift license or similar will double the fun. You might be asked to help construct the bars and assist the food & beverages team as well. Be mindful that production tasks also include some more preparational work such as mopping floors or cleaning out stock areas. Time to roll up the sleeves!
This atelier is spread across two timeframes:
Bring the site back to its initial state. All stories come to an end.
All stories come to an end. Together with the team of production you are in charge of bringing the site back to its initial state. This can range from the deconstruction of stages to collecting all the furniture. Knowing a thing or two about festival production is definitely a plus, and owning a forklift license or similar will double the fun. Let the festival weekend still be but a vivid memory!
Compensation for the deconstruction will be in the form of reimbursements only. If you have already purchased festival tickets and plan to participate in the deconstruction, we will refund your ticket costs. Simply put, to join the Atelier and receive your refund, you'll need to purchase a festival ticket upfront. This helps ensure that everyone who signs up fulfills their shifts as planned. If you were unable to secure your ticket(s) in time, please reach out to us, and we'll provide access to our hidden shop.
The Atelier is spread across five weeks from April 14th until May 17th. Horst provides accommodation, essential sanitation, meals, beverages, and engaging activities like talks, workshops, and group visits to Kiosk Radio. Each week offers unique experiences and, in return for your contributions, you'll receive a three-day festival ticket with camping.
Applications are open for one month, between February 1st and March 1st. We value the perspectives, voices, and insights from people of diverse backgrounds and are committed to building a culturally diverse movement.
