What are the ideas behind Collective Care?
The Collective Care program embodies the principles of safer spaces. Originating from the queer and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of colour) communities, safer spaces challenge the notion that violence and discrimination are inevitable in nightlife environments. Instead, it centers on prioritizing the safety of marginalized individuals while offering support to everyone. In essence, creating a safer space means fostering an environment where everyone can enjoy themselves without fear for their safety.
Why isn’t it called a “safe space”?
The term "safe space" suggests absolute safety, which unfortunately is unattainable. We recognize that safety means different things to different people and can be subjective. Thus, we prefer the term "safer spaces" to acknowledge this complexity and the ongoing work required to make our environment as safe as possible for all.
Who is on the Collective Care team?
The Collective Care team comprises members of the underground dance community from Belgium and beyond. Additionally, this year, we're proud to once again collaborate with Safe 'n Sound, providing visitors with additional sensitivity and information regarding harm reduction and safety at the festival. Our volunteers bring diverse experiences to their roles and undergo training in harm reduction and victim support.
Is the team affiliated with security or the police?
No, the Collective Care team operates independently from security or law enforcement. One of our objectives is to minimize the need for guests to interact with security or police. However, if a situation arises that necessitates their involvement, we will remain by your side to ensure you receive the support you need.
How can I contact the Collective Care team with ideas, feedback, complaints or issues?
We encourage you to reach out to uscollectivecare@horstartsandmusic.com with any thoughts, suggestions, or concerns. You can also anonymously fill in this form. Your input is of the utmost value as we continuously strive to improve and refine our practices.
