Binary Sunset by Brasebin Terrisse and Björn Vanoverberghe is the winning design selected from the fritz-kolab Open Call, launched by fritz-kola and Horst Arts & Music in January 2025.

This annual competition invites young and upcoming collectives to dream, design, and deliver a space for the Horst Arts & Music Festival. For this inaugural edition, participants were challenged to transform a rooftop on an existing building into a publicly accessible space, both during and after the festival.

Between Moon-Ra and Rotunda/Vesshcell lies a small dormant building, a remnant barrack from the old military campus. Through three acts, its roof is made accessible, becoming a space for gathering and contemplation, where one can gaze at the horizon and enjoy the sunset.

ACT I - From the Square to the Rooftop: The former base is transformed into welcoming, generous steps that extend the square up to the roof.

ACT II - Two Roofs, Two Moods: The building is crowned with a new festive identity, reflecting its new public function. The existing configuration of the building is used to create two distinct rooftop spaces, each with its own unique atmosphere—one extroverted offering views towards the surrounding landscape, one introverted framed by four walls and open to the sky.

ACT III - Waking Up the Building: A new device is added, becoming a landmark and reference point for both the festival and Asiat Park. After the sunset, the giant sphere gets lit, floating in the dark. 

Binary Sunset brings a sense of domesticity and community to this elevated platform, awakening the building while introducing a new trinity within Asiat Park.

Elisabeth Terrisse de Botton (ES) and Matthieu Brasebin (FR) are two architects based in Brussels (BE). They are interested in the production of space, focusing on its climatic, social, and cultural dimensions.

Their practice intends to strengthen pre-existing opportunities with architecture as a means of building and thinking. They have collaborated together since 2023, after winning Europan 17, first prize for their proposal “Earth, Wind and Water” in Makarska (HR).
For the Concéntrico #10 festival, they collaborated with the team Make it Rain for the construction of a climatic pavilion. For the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024 they won the open call for the installation pavilion, which is currently being built. 

Björn Vanoverberghe is a Brussels-based architect and designer interested in the different states and experiences of space. His work explores the interplay between  material and immaterial elements, integrating tangible construction techniques with more ephemeral aspects such as light, shadow, and spatial transitions. He values direct engagement in making and construction, seeing it as an essential tool for refining and enhancing his designs. 

Binary Sunset de Brasebin Terrisse et Björn Vanoverberghe est le projet gagnant de l'Open Call du fritz-kolab, lancé par fritz-kola et Horst Arts & Music en janvier 2025.

Ce concours annuel invite des collectifs jeunes et prometteurs à rêver, concevoir et livrer un espace pour le festival Horst Arts & Music. Pour cette édition inaugurale, les participants ont été mis au défi de transformer le toit d'un bâtiment existant en un espace accessible au public, à la fois pendant et après le festival.

Entre Moon-Ra et Rotunda/Vesshcell se trouve un petit bâtiment inutilisé, vestige d'une ancienne caserne située sur l'ancien site militaire. En trois actes, le toit sera rendu accessible et sera transformé en un espace de rencontre et de réflexion, où les visiteurs pourront regarder l'horizon et admirer le coucher du soleil.

ACTE I - De la place au toit

L'ancienne base se transforme en larges marches accueillantes qui prolongent la place jusqu'au toit.

ACTE II - Deux toits, deux ambiances
Le bâtiment se dote d'une nouvelle identité festive qui reflète sa nouvelle fonction publique. La structure existante est exploitée pour créer deux toits différents, chacun avec son propre caractère - l'un ouvert et extraverti, l'autre plus abrité et introverti.

ACTE III - Le bâtiment s'éveille

Un nouvel élément est ajouté, un phare qui, par la lumière, la couleur et la fumée, fournit un point de repère non seulement pour le festival mais aussi pour le parc Asiat.

Binary Sunset apporte un sentiment d'appartenance et de communauté à cette plateforme surélevée, donnant vie au bâtiment et créant une nouvelle trinité au sein du parc Asiat.

Elisabeth Terrisse de Botton (ES) et Matthieu Brasebin (FR) sont deux architectes installés à Bruxelles qui se concentrent sur la production d'espace, en prêtant attention aux aspects climatiques, sociaux et culturels. Ils travaillent ensemble depuis 2023, après avoir remporté Europan 17 avec « Earth, Wind and Water » à Makarska (Croatie). Ils ont collaboré à la construction d’un pavillon climatique pour Concéntrico#10 et ont remporté l'appel d’offres pour le pavillon des installations de la Biennale d'architecture de Tallinn 2024, qui est actuellement en cours de construction.

Björn Vanoverberghe est un architecte et designer de Bruxelles qui s'intéresse fortement aux aspects matériels et immatériels de l'espace. Son travail combine les techniques de construction avec la lumière, l'ombre et les transitions spatiales, dont l'implication directe dans le processus de création est essentielle à son approche de la conception.

Binary Sunset van Brasebin Terrisse en Björn Vanoverberghe is het winnende ontwerp van de fritz-kolab Open Call, die in januari 2025 werd uitgeschreven door fritz-kola en Horst Arts & Music.

Deze jaarlijkse wedstrijd nodigt jonge en opkomende collectieven uit om een ruimte voor het Horst Arts & Music Festival te dromen, te ontwerpen en op te leveren. Voor deze eerste editie werden deelnemers uitgedaagd om een dak van een bestaand gebouw te transformeren in een publiek toegankelijke ruimte, zowel tijdens als na het festival.

Tussen Moon-Ra en Weaving Weeds ligt een klein, sluimerend gebouw, een overblijfsel van een oude kazerne op het voormalige militaire terrein. In drie acts wordt het dak toegankelijk gemaakt en omgevormd tot een ruimte voor ontmoeting en bezinning, waar bezoekers kunnen uitkijken over de horizon en de zonsondergang kunnen bewonderen.

De voormalige basis verandert in brede, uitnodigende treden die het plein uitbreiden tot aan het dak.

ACT II - Twee daken, twee sferen

Het gebouw krijgt een nieuwe, feestelijke identiteit die zijn nieuwe publieke functie weerspiegelt. De bestaande structuur wordt benut om twee verschillende daken te creëren, elk met een eigen karakter—de ene open en extravert, de andere meer beschut en introvert.

ACT III - Het gebouw ontwaakt
Een nieuw element wordt toegevoegd, een baken dat zowel voor het festival als voor Asiat Park een herkenningspunt vormt, door middel van licht, kleur en rook.

Binary Sunset brengt een gevoel van huiselijkheid en gemeenschap naar dit verhoogde platform, waardoor het gebouw heropleeft en een nieuwe drie-eenheid binnen Asiat Park ontstaat.

Ze werken sinds 2023 samen, na het winnen van Europan 17 met “Earth, Wind and Water” in Makarska (HR). Ze werkten mee aan een klimatologisch paviljoen voor Concéntrico#10 en wonnen de open oproep voor het installatiepaviljoen van de Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024, dat momenteel in aanbouw is.

Björn Vanoverberghe is een architect en ontwerper uit Brussel, met een sterke interesse in de materiële en immateriële aspecten van ruimte. Zijn werk combineert bouwtechnieken met licht, schaduw en ruimtelijke overgangen, waarbij directe betrokkenheid bij het maakproces essentieel is voor zijn ontwerpbenadering.
