Brussels-based designer Kenza Taleb Vandeput (1992°, Ukkel, BE)  embodies the rich cultural mosaic of her dual Algerian and Belgian heritage. This duality isn't just reflected in her name; it fuels the very essence of her brand, Kasbah Kosmic. 

Since October 2024, Kenza Vandeput has been active as an artist in residence at the Asiat Park site, in collaboration with Horst. From her studio in Vilvoorde, she created Soit pas trop Flag.

The installation explores themes such as land, identity, and decolonisation. Flags are the starting point: they refer to the countries we come from and the places we feel at home, while also communicating through colors and graphic elements. They are visible and recognizable, but also make the invisible layers of identity and history tangible. Vandeput, who is half Belgian and half Algerian, draws inspiration from the strong presence of flags in Algerian culture, where they have symbolized resistance and pride since independence in 1962.

Vandeput uses flags and textiles to cover a 16-meter-high old antenna in Asiat Park to form a structure that was inspired by the minaret of a mosque. Like a minaret, the antenna calls for connection and communication.

The title "Soit pas trop Flag" is a French wordplay. "Flag" is slang for "flagrant", so the phrase can be roughly translated to “don’t stand out too much.” However, this work is precisely about making visible what is often hidden: people, stories, and cultures. It connects communities that live in and around the park, but are not always seen or heard.

Working from a temporary studio in Asiat Park, Kenza collaborated with local organisations such as Alif-Lam and (W)arm-kracht, and drew inspiration from the social fabric of Vilvoorde. The result is an artistic intervention that brings together textiles, fashion, and a sense of community, inviting us to pause and reflect on who we are and with whom we share this land.

Kenza studied one year at the Royal Academy of Antwerp while continuing to hone her skills in the world of vintage, which remains a central facet of her design philosophy. These experiences instilled in her a keen eye for sourcing unique materials,a deep understanding of textile potential in pre-owned garments,and a certain sentimentality for pre-owned garments. So, Kenza’s circular approach has become a trademark of her artistic practice.

But, Kenza's journey extends beyond fashion. 

She is fueled by a desire to empower individuals through self-expression in the hopes of fostering a more vibrant and diverse world. With this “radical imagination” and deep-rooted belief in inclusivity, Kenza explores social art practices by collaborating with neurodivergent artists. 

In 2019, she launched the brand Kasbah Kosmic with the idea of using fashion as a bridge to connect cultures and celebrate individuality. Her work is a testament to the transformative power of inclusivity and the beauty that arises from embracing diverse backgrounds.  

Furthermore, Kenza's expertise extends to bespoke design. As a creative director, she crafted made-to-measure fashion pieces for advertising campaigns, artists, and exhibitions displayed at prestigious institutions like MIMA (Brussels), MUHKA (Antwerp), and Droog Gallery in  Amsterdam.

Depuis octobre 2024, Kenza Vandeput travaille en tant qu'artiste en résidence sur le site du Parc Asiat, en collaboration avec Horst. C’est dans son studio de Vilvorde qu’elle a créé Soit pas trop Flag.

L'installation explore les thèmes de la terre, de l'identité et de la décolonisation. Les drapeaux sont le point de départ : ils font référence au pays d'où nous venons et au pays où nous nous sentons chez nous, mais ils communiquent également par le biais de couleurs et d’éléments graphiques. Ils sont visibles, reconnaissables, mais rendent également tangibles des couches invisibles d'identité et d'histoire. Vandeput, elle-même à moitié belge et à moitié algérienne, s'inspire de la forte présence des drapeaux dans la culture algérienne, où ils symbolisent la résistance et la fierté depuis l'indépendance de 1962.

S’inspirant du minaret d'une mosquée, elle recouvre une ancienne antenne de 16 mètres de haut du parc Asiat à l'aide de drapeaux et de textiles. Comme un minaret, la structure appelle au contact et à la communication.

Le titre « Soit pas trop Flag » est un jeu de mots. Flag est un mot d'argot qui signifie

« flagrant », c'est-à-dire « ne pas trop se faire remarquer ». Mais ce travail vise précisément à rendre visible ce qui reste souvent caché : les gens, les histoires et les cultures. Il cherche à relier les communautés qui vivent à l'intérieur et autour du parc, mais qui ne sont pas toujours vues ou entendues.

Dans son atelier temporaire à Asiat Park, Kenza a collaboré avec des organisations locales telles que Alif-Lam et (W)arm-force en s'inspirant du tissu social de Vilvorde. Le résultat est une intervention artistique qui réunit le textile, la mode et l'esprit communautaire. Elle nous invite à prendre un moment pour réfléchir à qui nous sommes et avec qui nous partageons cette terre.

La créatrice Kenza Taleb Vandeput, basée à Bruxelles, incarne la riche mosaïque culturelle de sa double origine algérienne et belge. Cette dualité ne se reflète pas seulement dans son nom, mais constitue également le cœur de sa marque, Kasbah Kosmic.

Kenza a étudié pendant un an à l'Académie royale d'Anvers et a également affiné ses compétences dans le monde du vintage, un élément clé de sa philosophie de la conception. Ces expériences lui ont permis d'acquérir un sens aigu de la recherche de matériaux uniques et une compréhension profonde du potentiel des textiles dans les vêtements de seconde main. Son travail témoigne d'un certain sentimentalisme à l'égard des vêtements disposant d’une deuxième vie. Pour Kenza l’approche circulaire s’impose comme une évidence dans son travail.

Le parcours de Kenza va bien au-delà de la mode. Son exploration des pratiques artistiques sociales, en collaborant avec des artistes neuro-divergents, reflète son engagement en faveur d'une « imagination radicale » et sa croyance profonde en l'inclusivité. Cela nourrit son désir de rendre les individus plus autonomes par l'expression de soi et de contribuer à un monde plus vivant et plus diversifié.

En 2019, elle a lancé la marque Kasbah Kosmic avec l'idée d'utiliser la mode comme un pont entre les cultures et comme une célébration de l'individualité. Son travail témoigne du pouvoir de transformation de l'inclusivité et de la beauté qui découle de l'adoption de différents vécus.

En outre, l'expertise de Kenza s'étend à la conception sur mesure. En tant que directrice de la création, elle a conçu des pièces de mode sur mesure pour des campagnes publicitaires, des artistes et des expositions présentées dans des institutions prestigieuses telles que le MIMA (Bruxelles), MUHKA (Anvers) et la galerie Droog à Amsterdam.

Sinds oktober 2024 is Kenza Vandeput (1992°, Ukkel, BE) als artist in residence actief op de site van Asiat Park, in samenwerking met Horst. Vanuit haar atelier in Vilvoorde creëerde ze Soit pas trop Flag.

De installatie onderzoekt thema’s zoals land, identiteit en dekolonisatie. Vlaggen vormen het vertrekpunt: ze verwijzen naar het land waar we vandaan komen, en het land waar we ons thuis voelen maar communiceren ook via kleuren en grafische elementen. Ze zijn zichtbaar, herkenbaar maar maken ook onzichtbare lagen van identiteit en geschiedenis voelbaar. Vandeput, zelf half Belgisch en half Algerijns, haalt inspiratie uit de sterke aanwezigheid van vlaggen in de Algerijnse cultuur, waar ze symbool staan voor verzet en trots sinds de onafhankelijkheid in 1962.

Het resultaat is een artistieke interventie die textiel, mode en gemeenschapsgevoel samenbrengt en uitnodigt om even stil te staan bij wie we zijn, en met wie we dit land delen.

Kenza Taleb Vandeput is een Belgisch-Algerijnse ontwerpster en de oprichtster van het Brusselse slow-fashion label Kasbah Kosmic. Geboren in Ukkel als dochter van een Belgische vader en een Algerijnse moeder, groeide ze op tussen twee culturen, wat haar creatieve visie sterk beïnvloedde.

Met Kasbah Kosmic, opgericht in 2019, streeft Kenza ernaar culturele identiteiten te uiten en mensen te betrekken bij echt duurzame mode. Haar ontwerpen combineren elementen uit zowel de Noord-Afrikaanse als de westerse cultuur, vaak door middel van upcycling en het gebruik van tweedehands materialen.

Kenza's werk is tentoongesteld in diverse internationale pop-ups, waaronder in Parijs, Amsterdam, New York, Londen, Brussel en Antwerpen. Daarnaast was ze genomineerd voor de Belgian Fashion Awards in de categorieën 'Changemaker of the Year' in 2022 en 'Best Belgian Brand' in 2023.
