With Trees as a Human Landscape, Maen Florin brings together eight existing sculptures that depict organisms blurring the lines between human and plant.

As in previous years, sewer pipes serve as public pedestals in Asiat Park, transforming the space into a temporary gallery of contemporary artworks, interspersed with real plants and functional street lighting.

Pedestals in our urban landscapes traditionally carry statues of heroes, statesmen, or historical events, tangible reminders of human triumphs and power. In this work, Florin reverses that logic. Instead of placing the human at the center, she elevates nature to the status of monument. Where classical statues remain frozen in time, Florin’s figures seem to move, mutate, and adapt to their surroundings. These ceramic sculptures, hand-modeled and glazed, appear to rise organically from the pedestals themselves like living organisms. Rather than celebrating heroic deeds or territorial conquests, they honor growth, vulnerability, and connection to the earth.

Presenting artworks on these columns has, over the years, developed into a recurring tradition within the Horst Expo. These concrete sewer pipes served as structure for a temporary festival stage in 2023, called State Of Play, designed by Stand Van Zaken. Stand Van Zaken was founded in 2019 and is composed of Stefanie Everaert, Caroline Lateur (together known as Doorzon Interieurarchitecten), and visual artist Theo De Meyer.

In 2024, the tradition continued with six artists, all alumni of the former HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts), in collaboration with .TheWorkshop.

Maen Florin (1954, Kleine-Brogel, BE) is a visual artist dedicated to creating monumental ceramic sculptures. Her work explores the transformation of life forms, in which human, animal, and plant elements merge into hybrid beings.

Florin uses clay as her definitive medium, allowing intuition, chance, and material to interact. Her figures, sometimes fairy-tale-like, sometimes unsettling, move between evolution and symbiosis, vulnerability and strength. She sketches a speculative future where new connections between humans and nature emerge, opening a poetic gateway to alternative worlds through her sculptures.

Florin has presented her work in numerous solo exhibitions, including Strange Paradise (ISELP, Brussels, 2023), Out of Paradise (Cultuurhuis Merelbeke, 2022), and Playing at being Human (Museum Hof van Busleyden, De Garage & Sint-Janskerk, Mechelen, 2020). She has also participated in international group exhibitions such as the Beaufort 2021 Art Triennial, Teen Spirit (BPS22, Charleroi, 2022), and What’s the Story? II (KMSKA, Antwerp, 2024). In 2025, her work will be shown at Art ZUID Amsterdam.

Dans son œuvre Trees as a Human Landscape, Maen Florin rassemble huit sculptures existantes représentant des organismes en équilibre à la frontière entre l'humain et le végétal.

Comme chaque année, des tuyaux d'égout servent de socles publics dans le parc Asiat, transformant l'espace en une galerie temporaire d'œuvres d'art contemporaines, entrecoupée de vraies plantes et d'un éclairage public fonctionnel.

Traditionnellement, le piédestal de notre paysage urbain porte une image de héros, d'hommes d'État ou d'événement historique, rappel tangible des victoires et du pouvoir de l'homme. Dans cette œuvre, Florin renverse cette logique. Au lieu de placer l'homme au centre, elle élève la nature au rang de monument sous la forme de sculptures en céramique, sculptées à la main et émaillées. Là où les statues classiques restent figées dans le temps, les figures de Florin semblent bouger, muter, s'adapter à leur environnement. Au lieu d'actes héroïques et de conquêtes géographiques, il célèbre la croissance, la vulnérabilité et le lien avec la terre.

La présentation d'œuvres d'art sur les colonnes est devenue une tradition récurrente à Horst Expo ces dernières années. 

En 2023, ces colonnes ont servi de base à la scène principale du festival, appelée State of Play et conçue par Stand Van Zaken. Fondé en 2019, Stand Van Zaken est composé de Stefanie Everaert, Caroline Lateur (connues ensemble sous le nom de Doorzon Interieurarchitecten) et de l'artiste visuel gantois Theo de Meyer. Depuis lors, les tuyaux d’égout servent de socles pour l'éclairage extérieur, les plantes et les œuvres d'art.

En 2024, cette tradition s'est poursuivie avec six artistes, tous anciens élèves de la HISK (Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten/Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts), en collaboration avec .TheWorkshop.

Maen Florin (1954, Kleine-Brogel, Belgique) est une artiste plasticienne qui se consacre aux sculptures monumentales en céramique. Son travail explore la transformation des formes de vie, dans lesquelles les éléments humains, animaux et végétaux fusionnent pour former des êtres hybrides.

Florin utilise l'argile comme médium définitif, laissant l'intuition, le hasard et la matière interagir. Ses figures, tantôt féeriques, tantôt inquiétantes, alternent entre évolution et symbiose, vulnérabilité et force. Met Trees as a Human Landscape brengt Maen Florin acht bestaande sculpturen samen die organismen verbeelden die balanceren op de grens tussen mens en plant.

Net als elk jaar doen rioolbuizen dienst als publieke sokkels in Asiat Park, waardoor de ruimte verandert in een tijdelijke galerij van hedendaagse kunstwerken, afgewisseld met echte planten en functionele straatverlichting.

Traditioneel dragen sokkels in ons stadsbeeld beelden van helden, staatsmannen of historische gebeurtenissen, tastbare herinneringen aan menselijke overwinningen en macht. In dit werk keert Florin die logica om. In plaats van de mens centraal te stellen, verheft zij natuur tot monument in de vorm van keramische sculpturen, met de hand geboetseerd en geglazuurd. Waar klassieke standbeelden stilstaan in de tijd, lijken Florins figuren te bewegen, te muteren, zich aan te passen aan hun omgeving. In plaats van heroïsche daden en geografische veroveringen, vieren ze groei, kwetsbaarheid en verbinding met de aarde. 

Het presenteren van kunstwerken op de zuilen heeft zich de afgelopen jaren ontwikkeld tot een terugkerende traditie binnen de Horst Expo.

Deze betonnen rioolbuizen deden dienst als basis voor een tijdelijk festivalpodium in 2023, genaamd State Of Play, ontworpen door Stand Van Zaken. Stand Van Zaken is opgericht in 2019 en bestaat uit Stefanie Everaert, Caroline Lateur (samen bekend als Doorzon Interieurarchitecten) en beeldend kunstenaar Theo de Meyer.
Sindsdien functioneren de rioolbuizen als sokkels voor buitenverlichting, planten en kunstwerken.

In 2024 werd deze traditie voortgezet met zes kunstenaars, allen alumni van het voormalige HISK (Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten), in samenwerking met .TheWorkshop.
