As a part of this year’s expo programme, the experimental collective Stand Van Zaken and multidisciplinary artist Serban Ionescu bundled their expertise for a total redesign of the former Officer’s bar. Once a mere relic of a military past, the space has now evolved into a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’. The revitalization of the bar is a harmonious blend of circular materials, lively colours, and unexpected fixtures.

The exterior also underwent a metamorphosis, thereby complementing the renovation of the interior finished at the beginning of this year. Inspired by the monumental entrance of Andrea Palladio's Villa La Rotonda, Stand van Zaken and Serban Ionescu set out to create an accessible and inviting destination for everyone. Visitors are welcomed to the Paradeplein by a central entrance flanked by two sculptures. The side entrance is rethought as a generous user-friendly ramp for wheelchairs and pushchairs. 

The mobile furniture allows for a flexible layout and multi-functional use of the space. The tables on wheels fit together as puzzle pieces, so that a central dance floor can appear, crowned by a room-filling chandelier which illuminates the interior. The new tapwall, as an altarpiece, is overlooking the space and ready to quench the thirsty. But the design not only honours the former purpose of this modest building: it moves beyond aesthetics and puts community at the literal centre. Hosted by Bar Bâtard the Officer’s Bar will serve as Asiat Park's central meeting place where you can enjoy drinks, food and various activities all year around. Besides this, they will also engage with social associations, starting from June onwards. Together with poverty organisation Warmkracht they will host social initiatives and workshops, supporting the local neighbourhood. 

Stand Van Zaken consists of Stefanie Everaert and Caroline Lateur (together known as Doorzon Interieurarchitecten) and Ghent-based visual artist Theo de Meyer. Collaboration plays an important role in their practice as well as circular material use as construction principle. 

Serban Ionescu (b. 1984, Ploiesti, RO) grew up in New York City. His work encompasses sculpture, painting, design and architecture. With his distinctive lines stemming from his drawing practice, vibrant use of colour and cartoonish gestures, Serban imbues his works with anthropomorphic forms and a constant intuitive play with shifting scale and form.

Dans le cadre du programme d'exposition de cette année, le collectif expérimental Stand Van Zaken et l'artiste multidisciplinaire Serban Ionescu ont mis en commun leur expertise pour une refonte totale de l'ancien bar des officiers. Autrefois simple vestige d'un passé militaire, l'espace a maintenant évolué en une œuvre d’art totale ou 'Gesamtkunstwerk'. La réhabilitation du mess est un mélange harmonieux de matériaux circulaires, de couleurs vives et d’ornements inattendus.

L'extérieur a également subi une métamorphose, complétant ainsi la rénovation de l'intérieur achevée au début de cette année. Inspirés par l'entrée monumentale de la Villa La Rotonda d'Andrea Palladio, Stand van Zaken et Serban Ionescu se sont lancés dans la création d'une destination accessible et attrayante pour tous. Les visiteurs sont accueillis sur la place nommée ‘Paradeplein’ par une entrée centrale flanquée de deux sculptures. L'entrée latérale est repensée comme une rampe généreuse et conviviale pour les fauteuils roulants et les poussettes.

Le mobilier mobile permet une disposition flexible et une utilisation multifonctionnelle de l'espace. Les tables sur roulettes s'emboîtent comme des pièces de puzzle, de sorte qu'une piste de danse centrale puisse apparaître, surmontée d'un lustre qui illumine l'intérieur. Le nouveau mur de robinets, tel un retable, surplombe l'espace et est prêt à étancher la soif des visiteurs. Mais le design n'honore pas seulement l'ancienne vocation de ce modeste bâtiment : il va au-delà de l'esthétique et place littéralement la communauté au centre. Le mess des officiers servira de lieu de rencontre central du parc Asiat où, accueillis par les tenanciers Bar Bâtard, vous pouvez profiter de boissons, de nourriture et de diverses activités toute l'année. En outre, à partir de juin, les tenanciers collaboreront également avec des associations sociales, comme Warmkracht qui lutte contre la pauvreté. Ils organiseront des initiatives sociales et des ateliers, soutenant le quartier.

Stand Van Zaken a été fondé en 2019 et est composé de Stefanie Everaert, Caroline Lateur (connues ensemble sous le nom de ‘Doorzon Interieurarchitecten’) et de l'artiste visuel basé à Gand, Theo de Meyer. La collaboration joue un rôle important dans leur pratique, tout comme l'utilisation de matériaux circulaires comme principe de construction.

Serban Ionescu (né en 1984 à Ploiești, Roumanie) a grandi à New York. Son travail englobe la sculpture, la peinture, le design et l'architecture. Avec ses lignes distinctives, issues de sa pratique du dessin, une utilisation vive de la couleur et des gestes caricaturaux, Serban imprègne ses œuvres de formes anthropomorphiques et d'un jeu intuitif constant entre l'échelle et la forme.
