Dark Skies is an experience designed by Leopold Banchini & Giona Bierens de Haan in collaboration with DJ and producer DVS1. It is not just an architecturally designed pavilion but rather a large-scale audio system spanning over more than 900 square meters, defining a precise space for bodies meeting in sound.

Entirely suspended above the crowd, the roof of speakers creates a close and intimate relation between the membranes and the ears, removing the attention from the performer. A democratic and multidirectional dancefloor, no one is further than a couple meters from the sound source and everyone is in the forefront.

Materials:

Black impregnated wood, reclaimed ceiling panels from the renovation of Asiat Park, corrugated metal sheets, steel column bases and prefabricated concrete slabs.

Leopold Banchini architects (1981, Geneva, CH) aims to develop an eclectic and non-dogmatic architecture celebrating simplicity, economy and sustainability. We see architecture as a tool to support unexpected and diverse ways of living together and refuse to use buildings as representations of power, wealth or cultural superiority. We value the poetry of construction over composition and admire direct answers to unique sites and contexts.

We look for humble aesthetics based on the veracity of expression against preconceived functionalism. We use creativity to encourage alternative models to commercial methods of production and expand the traditional definitions of project making using DIY and re-use cultures as means of emancipation. We challenge established relations of knowledge supremacies and admire the beauty of neo-vernacular buildings and popular intelligence. We see the origins of architectural elements beyond borders and historical periods. We place political and environmental considerations at the very heart of our practice and address architecture as a form of social action.

Giona Bierens de Haan  (1987, CH) is an architect and artist based in Geneva. His work navigates between architecture, design, artistic installations, and scenography, exploring space in an open-ended manner. Through installations that subvert reality, he plays with the absurd, the unexpected, and humor to question our relationship with the standardization, rationalization, and optimization inherent in our consumer society. Regularly collaborating with other artists, he has exhibited solo and in group shows across Europe, Canada, and Argentina. 

DVS1's (1976, Saint Petersburg, RU) status as one of the world's most revered DJs and a leading advocate for the true essence of club culture is grounded in his profound love for music, respect for the art, and experiences in the '90s Midwestern American rave scene. After nearly three decades of running and building sound systems, owning a club, and throwing underground events, his focal point of operation, HUSH, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. This pivotal milestone will unfold through new music releases, innovative projects, and thoughtfully curated events, including The Wall of Sound — the transformative dancefloor experience that reflects DVS1's vision and dedication to elevating the art of sound and building community.

Dark Skies est une expérience conçue par Leopold Banchini et Giona Bierens de Haan, en collaboration avec le DJ et producteur DVS1. Il ne s'agit pas d'un simple pavillon architectural, mais plutôt d'un système audio à grande échelle, de plus de 30 mètres, définissant un espace précis pour les corps qui se rencontrent dans le son.

Le toit des haut-parleurs est complètement suspendu au-dessus de la foule, créant une relation étroite et intime entre les membranes qui captent les vibrations et les oreilles. L'attention se détourne de l'artiste pour se concentrer sur l'expérience d'écoute partagée.

Matériaux :

Bois imprégné noir, panneaux de plafond récupérés lors de la rénovation de l'Asiat Park, tôles ondulées, bases de colonnes en acier et dalles de béton préfabriquées.

Dark Skies est une piste de danse démocratique et multidirectionnelle : personne ne se trouve à plus de quelques mètres de la source sonore, tout le monde peut se mouvoir au premier plan.

Leopold Banchini Architects est un bureau d'architecture qui vise à développer une architecture éclectique et non dogmatique célébrant la simplicité, l'économie et la durabilité.  Leur travail remet en question les idées dominantes sur le pouvoir, l'esthétique et la production, tout en adoptant une approche poétique de la construction. Giona Bierens de Haan est un architecte et artiste genevois. Son travail oscille entre architecture, scénographie et installations. Avec humour et une touche d'absurde, il questionne notre rapport au monde standardisé de la consommation et de l'efficacité. Il collabore souvent avec d'autres artistes et a exposé en Europe, au Canada et en Argentine, notamment.

DVS1 est un DJ renommé et un défenseur des valeurs fondamentales de la culture des clubs. Sa carrière a débuté sur la scène rave du Midwest américain dans les années 1990. Grâce à sa plateforme HUSH, il a créé non seulement des systèmes de son et des événements, mais aussi toute une communauté autour de l'art du son. En 2025, HUSH fêtera son 30e anniversaire avec de nouveaux projets et l'installation immersive The Wall of Sound.

Dark Skies is een ervaring ontworpen door Leopold Banchini & Giona Bierens de Haan, in samenwerking met DJ en producer DVS1. Het is meer dan een architecturaal paviljoen: het is een imposante houten structuur die een grootschalig audiosysteem draagt en zich uitstrekt over 900 vierkante meter.

Zo ontstaat een nauwkeurig gedefinieerde ruimte voor lichamen om elkaar te ontmoeten in een unieke geluidservaring. Volledig opgehangen boven het publiek vormt het dak van luidsprekers een directe en intieme relatie tussen de membranen van de speakers en de oren van de bezoekers, waarbij de aandacht wordt weggenomen van de performer. Een democratische en multidirectionele dansvloer: niemand bevindt zich verder dan enkele meters van de geluidsbron, en iedereen staat op de eerste rij.

Zwart geïmpregneerd hout, teruggewonnen plafondpanelen van de renovatie van Asiat Park, metalen golfplaten, stalen kolomvoeten en geprefabriceerde betonplaten.

Met humor en een vleug absurditeit bevraagt hij onze relatie tot de gestandaardiseerde wereld van consumptie en efficiëntie. Hij werkt vaak samen met andere kunstenaars en stelde tentoon in onder andere Europa, Canada en Argentinië.

DVS1 (1976, Sint-Petersburg, RU) is een gerenommeerde dj en pleitbezorger van de kernwaarden van clubcultuur. Zijn carrière begon in de Amerikaanse Midwest-rave scene van de jaren 90.
