Buried in a coffin the size of a grain of rice is a performative space in which the spectator becomes the protagonist.

Within this space of meditation, prayer, silence and offering, we are invited to at once re-enter the body and be transported to an in-between realm. Here, darkness is embraced to discover the first rays of light. A portal connects the ancestral with the mortal world and allows entities to watch over the current mortal realm, offering guidance to those willing to receive. We find a guardian watching over an unborn entity, in utero in the swamp.

During their presence in the closing week of Venice Biennial for the performance Pearls , Joshua Serafin filmed a new video work Midnight Pearls, now presented for the first time at Horst.

Joshua Serafin (1995°, Bacolod, PH) is a multi-disciplinary artist who combines dance, performance, visual arts and choreography. Born in the Philippines, they are currently based in Brussels. They are a house artist of VIERNULVIER for the season 2023-2027.

Exploring themes of transmigration and queer politics, Joshua centers their practice on Otherness, aiming to translate ideas of alterity and otherworldly narratives into embodied performance and forms of speculation. Their series “Cosmological Gangbang” is the result of their most recent artistic research, having unfolded in several iterations across different media, namely: Timawo, Creation Paradigm, VOID, and PEARLS, for which they are currently touring.

They participated in the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Adriano Pedrosa. Their work VOID video installation, VOID live performance and PEARLS were part of “Foreigners Everywhere”.

Serafin’s artistic process is an intense sociological exorcism of Filipino identity about global ideologies, and contemporary phenomena, unpacking the historical violence of its feudal contemporary society and its dehumanizing normality. They enfold these sites of creation into queer and trans methodologies intuited from within tropical myth, but also inspired by the dreamwork of a nonbinary cosmopolis that is populated by figures emancipated from colonial gender and embodied by turns in diverse states of solemnity and play.

Joshua’s globally acclaimed performance is committed to dwelling within interstitial spaces, a refusal to participate in dimorphic structures so they can craft an idiom where they can speak from the said in-betweenness.

Buried in a Coffin the Size of a Grain of Rice est un espace performatif dans lequel le spectateur lui-même joue le rôle principal.

Une figure sculpturale protectrice veille sur une entité à naître dans un marécage ici mis en scène. Cette installation invite à se reconnecter à son corps. C’est un lieu de méditation, de prière, de silence et de sacrifice. 

L'espace ressemble à une zone de transition, où l'on se retrouve momentanément entre deux mondes. Là où l'obscurité n'est pas à craindre, mais révèle plutôt la première lueur de la lumière. Un portail qui relie les ancêtres aux mortels, permettant aux entités de veiller sur ce monde et de guider ceux qui s'y ouvrent.

Lors de leur présence à la semaine de clôture de la Biennale de Venise pour la performance Pearls, Joshua Serafin a filmé une nouvelle œuvre vidéo, Midnight Pearls, présentée pour la première fois ici à Horst.

Joshua Serafin est un artiste multidisciplinaire qui combine la danse, la performance, l'art visuel et la chorégraphie. Né aux Philippines, Joshua est actuellement basé à Bruxelles. Il est  artiste résident au centre culturel VIERNULVIER  à Gand pour la saison 2023-2027.

Le travail de Joshua et sa troupe explore les thèmes de la transmigration et de la politique queer. Leur pratique artistique se concentre sur l’Otherness et tente de traduire les idées d'altérité ainsi que les récits de mondes étranges en performances des corps et en formes spéculatives. Le processus artistique de Serafin est un intense exorcisme sociologique de l'identité philippine en relation avec les idéologies mondiales et les phénomènes contemporains. Ils dissèquent la violence historique de la société féodale contemporaine et sa normalité déshumanisante. Leur travail mêle ces thèmes de création à des méthodologies queer et trans, intuitivement dérivées des mythologies tropicales mais également inspirées par le monde onirique d'une cosmo polis non binaire, peuplée de figures libérées des structures de genre coloniales et incarnées dans divers états de solennité et de jeu.

Les performances de Joshua, mondialement reconnues, se déroulent dans des espaces interstitiels, refusant de participer à des structures dimorphes, créant leur propre idiome dans lequel les artistes peuvent s'exprimer à partir de l'« entre-deux ».

Buried in a Coffin the Size of a Grain of Rice is een performatieve ruimte waarin de toeschouwer zelf de hoofdrol speelt.

Een sculpturale beschermfiguur waakt over een ongeboren entiteit in een geënsceneerd moeras. Deze installatie nodigt je uit om opnieuw in contact te komen met je lichaam, een plek voor meditatie, gebed, stilte en offerande.

De ruimte voelt als een overgangsgebied, waar je je even tussen werelden bevindt. Waar duisternis niet iets is om te vrezen, maar juist de eerste glimp van licht onthult. Een poort die het voorouderlijke verbindt met het sterfelijke, zodat entiteiten over deze wereld kunnen waken en richting kunnen geven aan wie ervoor openstaat.

Tijdens hun aanwezigheid in de slotweek van de Biënnale van Venetië voor de performance Pearls, filmde Joshua Serafin een nieuw videowerk Midnight Pearls, dat nu voor het eerst te zien is bij Horst.

Serafins artistieke proces is een intense sociologische exorcisme van de Filipijnse identiteit, gericht op globale ideologieën en hedendaagse fenomenen. Het ontleedt het historische geweld van de feodale hedendaagse samenleving en de ontmenselijkende normaliteit ervan. Hun werk verweeft deze creatieplekken met queer en trans methodologieën, intuïtief afgeleid van tropische mythologieën, maar ook geïnspireerd door de droomwereld van een non-binaire kosmopolis, bevolkt door figuren die zijn bevrijd van koloniale genderstructuren en belichaamd in uiteenlopende staten van plechtigheid en spel.

Joshua’s wereldwijd geprezen performancepraktijk beweegt zich in interstitiële ruimtes, weigert deel te nemen aan dimorfe structuren en creëert zo een eigen idioom waarin ze kunnen spreken vanuit het ‘tussenin-zijn’.
