For the (re)opening of the Horst Expo, we’re inviting exhibiting artists and local residents of Asiat Park for a conversation about the power of community in public space. This panel zooms in on the urgent need for places of interaction and social experimentation—and explores how art, architecture, and spatial interventions can drive community building and urban renewal. On the night’s menu:
Join us on May 15 from 16h00 to 22h00, free and open to all, for a festive open air celebration to kick-off a summer of ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’. Bar Bâtard will be serving drinks and delicious pizza. You can enter Asiat Park via Mechelsesteenweg 255. Register here if you'd like to attend.
The 2025 art programme, There Will Come Soft Rains, takes its name from the Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) poem, written in 1918 during the First World War and a flu pandemic. The poem imagines nature thriving despite human conflict, offering a metaphor for renewal and change.
At the heart of this transformation is Asiat Park. Once a military base and later a hub for artists and DJs, it is now becoming a vibrant urban district. Asiat continues to evolve beyond Vilvoorde’s military history—shaped by community, creativity, and culture.
The exhibition focuses on two key themes. On one hand, it explores how identity and culture interact with geographic origins in an increasingly connected world, questioning how these notions evolve and adapt within a global context. On the other, it highlights nature as a powerful and independent force. Through artistic interventions and performances, the exhibition reflects on how we belong, and how humans and nature can co-exist. From Asiat Park to the future Darse site, the exhibition raises questions about ecology, colonialism, and sustainability.
There Will Come Soft Rains entails site-specific artworks by Alter & Baukreisel, Atelier Fanelsa, brasebin terrisse & Björn Vanoverberghe, Esben Weile Kjær, Jean-Benoit Vétillard, Joshua Serafin, Kenza Taleb Vandeput, Banchini Bierens de Haan & DVS1, Maen Florin, Sounak Das, Sumayya Vally, YRD.Works. The Expo will be on view until 7 September 2025.
The Horst Expo is made possible thanks to the the heartfelt support of the City of Vilvoorde. Access to the Horst Expo is free all summer long thanks to the support of the National Lottery and its players.
